When we are younger, we are less afraid of many things, perhaps because of our ignorance in part. But much can be learned of such things we should be afraid of and in part about ourselves. In photographing such lightning 3x hotter than the Sun, it is not the great big thunderstorm that allows you to get the best access to the lightning, but rather, the small active thundershower that passes narrowly by in the night. All this then, just 3-4 miles away in less than a second. It is amazing what the naked eye doesn't see that the camera does!

I'd like to get one or two good shots of lightning at some point... Never could even if I knew how...Too many trees in the way...

Silhouetted tree branches or dark wires in front of the lightning ruin the shot. Very distracting.

All this detail in less than a second from a building T-shower. Bolt lightning activity here this year has been poor however. Just alot of "flicker-flash" stuff.

I know what you mean. I had a rainstorm come through my area last night, but all the lightning was behind the clouds and therefore utterly useless. Still waiting for a good storm to come along.

For me, it is usually the "popcorn" thundershower on a warm night that makes the best lightning. Bolts even are not worth trying to shoot if they are just occasional.
