Awakening, Pt. 1 of 10.            Somewhere in the empty outlands . . .

           A large dust devil blew rapidly across a dry field, stealing topsoil with each relentless spiral, before moving into the open pasture and disappearing from sight over a distant hill with its priceless treasure.  Ernest Cranway, the owner of the area of parched Earth, slowly shook his head in disgust as the uncanny thief scattered his precious soil all about where he did not want it.  Soon afterward, it diminished - perhaps to do its random dirty work somewhere else, and he turned his old truck onto an adjacent field where his son and other farmhand were waiting for him to return aAwakening, Pt. 1 of 10. by *Nightwalker50
Awakening, Pt. 2 of 10.            Ernest started the tractor and emptied its heavy load into the truck before they resumed the difficult monotonous job.  Both of them had their individual styles to make it less boring as they refilled the bucket behind them.  Micheal would often see how much he could lift at once or throw into it in various ways, while Terrence examined the stones one at a time for the second or two he held them, looking for fossils or pondering their origin.  Most of the rock was heavy, high-density pseudo-quartzite with broken jagged edges - material that used to be fine thick mud in a different age long-gone, where swampy forests grew in.  ImprAwakening, Pt. 2 of 10. by *Nightwalker50
Awakening, Pt. 3 of 10.            Ernest carefully drove the truck with more ease back across the creek and out of the cozy valley.  He and Terrence speculated on how the planted crops would grow in the coming summer and about the many variables that affected them and their very lives.  It was a common dialogue between both of them and much of the locals because the conditions were so dynamic in comparison to the area economy.  With their strength spent for the day, each went eagerly to their pleasant country homes to rest aching muscles and enhance a new similar curiosity.

Awakening, Pt. 4 of 10.            When Jane reached Terrence's location, he watched her get out of the pick-up truck, put a few small tools in the repair box attached to the side of the farmhand tractor, and walk closer to him.  She appeared to be doing some kind of work outside too, by the way she was dressed: blue jeans that were patched and faded, old boots, a cap, and a plain light windbreaker.  According to size, she was tall and kept strong by an active lifestyle, like some kind of prairie amazon.  Although her body had a fine attractive structure, resisting time well, her face was more ordinary, with a small nose, large wide mouth that enhanced her every smAwakening, Pt. 4 of 10. by *Nightwalker50

Displacements, Pt. 1 of 5.          The evening sun's feeble rays pierced the gnarled intermingling branches and variegated autumn foliage of weather-beaten trees and wild shrubs in various blade-like shafts.  Intercepting them were two people as eager to catch their little remaining warmth as the inevitably doomed flying insects of the waning season did.  Both were close friends, like the night and day joined by a similar twilight, but the complexity of nature's structure and elements around now increasingly countered their desire to be amongst them, challenging any familiar perceptions of the area.

Displacements, Pt. 2 of 5.          Jeremy was just reaching the place where Darian was supposed to meet him and saw no hint of his presence.  He casually walked amidst more bare ash trees and between thicker ones with more colorful persisting foliage -- a beautiful autumnal garden.  Its variety seemed almost pleasurably typical, until he heard a sonic boom sound in the distance.  The noise did not resemble a shotgun discharging from his position, and he looked up to try and find a probable source.

         The ascending tree trunks and their many dividing dark branches effectively shut out the brighter sky though, like sinister harbingers heralding the impending loDisplacements, Pt. 2 of 5. by *Nightwalker50
Displacements, Pt. 3 of 5.          Darian and Jeremy walked together in the direction they believed the pickup truck was parked next.  Splitting up again to cover more ground was the last thing on their minds; an increasing sense of anxiety and urgency developed amongst them over the next few minutes, as the sun's yellow disc merged with the horizon.  They scarcely said anything much to each other, and when they did, it was usually just a trivial question or comment about something unimportant to break the silence: all vain efforts to either hide or suppress their true feelings about the very uncanny encounters.

         Their walk was no longer casual either.  It Displacements, Pt. 3 of 5. by *Nightwalker50
Displacements, Pt. 4 of 5.          Jeremy reached the top of the open slope, panting some, and said, "Damn!  It's dark, but YOU . . . are . . . not."

         The sun, with about half its disc above the local horizon yet, cast its filtered orange light on him.  Only when he bent forward and put his hands on his knees however, did he see the extent of its protective rays.  His feet and lower legs were already in the gradually rising shadow.  "Oh, shit!  Darian," he said.

         He turned and saw him almost twice as far away as before the thing's last appearance.  "Darian, stop," he yelled.  "Come here, this way."

Family Feud
Dione's Talent, 1 of 6.                Dione Teslin dreaded the trip over to her rich uncle's estate, not because she disliked him or his wife, but because she wished to be with her parents, who were politely getting her out of the way before leaving on their vacation.  She also heard from time to time of the notorious and often outstanding reputations of her three older cousins staying there and reasoned they were either spoiled, plain wild, or both.  Furthermore, she was just a quiet young girl going to a markedly different and big place obviously mysterious to her in many ways.  No doubt, she would have to manage the new circumstances as best as possible to her Dione's Talent, 1 of 6. by *Nightwalker50
Dione's Talent, 2 of 6.                The next day was bright and sunny and after breakfast, Dione went out into the yard.   She walked briskly out onto the patio, and her eyes bulged when she saw the large swimming pool.  Slowly, she walked up to it as Marie joined her.  The pool was rectangular and deep.  She saw Colleen moving erratically about near the bottom and stepped backward fast.

               "You don't have to be afraid, Dione.  Colleen is only doing her aquatic exercises.  She's always in this pool.  I just wish I could get her to do some work in the house for once."

Dione's Talent, 3 of 6.                On the morning of the fourth day, Dione went out into the yard.  She walked along a thick row of blooming lilacs and came upon the gardener at its end.  He had just finished trimming the dense shrubbery from a narrow pathway and was just surveying his job.

               "It looks pretty good to me," Dione complemented.

               He bolted slightly and turned around, smiling.  "Oh, hello there!  How are you this morning?"

               "So far, so good, but it'll be another boring day."

               "Why so?"

               "Oh, it's the girls again.  They keep bothering me.  It's been that way ever since I gDione's Talent, 3 of 6. by *Nightwalker50
Dione's Talent, 4 of 6.                Dione went into the mansion and entered the living room briefly.  There, she came upon the maid, who was busy dusting the piano.  She walked quietly up to the woman and scared her.  Afterward, she removed the goggles and said, "How did I look?"

               "A bit fishy.  How is the swimming party coming along?"

               "It's quite boring -- now.  I was just going to get changed," she replied.  "How's your day been here so far?"

               "Not too bad, but I'm getting ready for this evening.  Those girls will bring their friends in here and make the biggest mess."

The Old One
Anomalies, Pt. 1 of 4.          A localized area of the earth trembled with a rare violence that very few living things on its surface had previously experienced.  The place was forested only over the last few thousand years and showed effects more of a much different kind of geologic restlessness.  Thus, the quake was additionally frightening and uncanny to the recent inhabitants who settled in it for security and solitude for many of their generations -- a sure reminder that nobody anywhere on the planet was absolutely safe from hostile elements in a chosen environment.

Anomalies, Pt. 2 of 4.          Scott heard a knocking and sat up fast in his bed as his Father entered the room and said, "Is there some kind of boogieman in here?  I heard you mumbling and tossing about on my way back from the bathroom."

         "No, nothing like that, Dad.  It was just that bad dream about me and Celeste in that . . .  weird situation again.  It's been happening to me more often recently."

         "I wonder why anyway.  We only went through a once-in-a-lifetime quake, not a war like you were making it sound, and it wasn't a big disaster by any means."

         "It wasn't a little shaker either.  Moderate if I recall."

Anomalies, Pt. 3 of 4.          Almost six hours later, Scott was driving into the Finger Cove recreational area along a narrow unpaved but well up-kept road.  It was winding and bounded by birch, dwarf oak, and other hardwood trees; granite rocks and boulders only were ornately moved to the fringes of each of its shoulders inside the place.  Deep brown painted signs with large white lettering designated points and subjects of interest in many directions, but there was only one that he was concerned with.  The shafts of morning sunlight penetrating through the dense growth and seemingly sparkling from their source as he drove indicated the general direction of theAnomalies, Pt. 3 of 4. by *Nightwalker50
Anomalies, Pt. 4 of 4.          Within twenty minutes, Scott's teasing more unified companions departed, leaving a promise to meet again at various other places in and about their hometown.  Scott watched their vehicles disappear from sight from beneath the cozy shelter before disposing of his empty soda can and venturing out in the open again.  A light breeze greeted him, and he took a deep breath while looking about and saw the first few convective cumulus clouds developing in a broken line along the far western horizon.  The sounds of passerine birds, meadowlarks, led him on; the swimmer further below captured his attention next.

Glad you like "Ransom Refused." I am colorizing others to complete this decade of works now - slowly, as Spring has begun; I try to still do one new drawing per month as time allows. Life is a thing in part of expression.

I don't do self-drawings but like to do works related to what I'm into: perils and glamour. I am always open to ideas anyway.

Well, I want(ed)damsel in distress/rescue scene. This orginal character named Viperia:[link] is tied to some kind of operating table and a mad-type scientist wants to cut her open to "examine" her insides(being half snake that is)and this big guy named Chainer:[link] bursts through the wall to save her. That's what I want, if you take this idea.

I DID finally and luckily take up the idea and have been working on it since April 29. My biggest and most difficult work. Line art should finally be done about May 8. Blame the bad weather at my location and fortuitous circumstances.

Glad I could help out. I just put my "John Hancock" on it and title: "Chainer's Challenge." Just some touch-up to do and later colorizing (pencil colors) to some extent. About thirty hours went into this since PM April 29 - an "advantage" of being underemployed, I suppose. Maybe, a better title for it would be "Nightwalker's Challenge?"
