A localized area of the earth trembled with a rare violence that very few living things on its surface had previously experienced. The place was forested only over the last few thousand years and showed effects more of a much different kind of geologic restlessness. Thus, the quake was additionally frightening and uncanny to the recent inhabitants who settled in it for security and solitude for many of their generations -- a sure reminder that nobody anywhere on the planet was absolutely safe from hostile elements in a chosen environment.
The tumultuous event was brief but very powerful. The stable platform of the regi

Scott heard a knocking and sat up fast in his bed as his Father entered the room and said, "Is there some kind of boogieman in here? I heard you mumbling and tossing about on my way back from the bathroom."
"No, nothing like that, Dad. It was just that bad dream about me and Celeste in that . . . weird situation again. It's been happening to me more often recently."
"I wonder why anyway. We only went through a once-in-a-lifetime quake, not a war like you were making it sound, and it wasn't a big disaster by any means."
"It wasn't a little shaker either. Moderate if I recall."

Almost six hours later, Scott was driving into the Finger Cove recreational area along a narrow unpaved but well up-kept road. It was winding and bounded by birch, dwarf oak, and other hardwood trees; granite rocks and boulders only were ornately moved to the fringes of each of its shoulders inside the place. Deep brown painted signs with large white lettering designated points and subjects of interest in many directions, but there was only one that he was concerned with. The shafts of morning sunlight penetrating through the dense growth and seemingly sparkling from their source as he drove indicated the general direction of the

Within twenty minutes, Scott's teasing more unified companions departed, leaving a promise to meet again at various other places in and about their hometown. Scott watched their vehicles disappear from sight from beneath the cozy shelter before disposing of his empty soda can and venturing out in the open again. A light breeze greeted him, and he took a deep breath while looking about and saw the first few convective cumulus clouds developing in a broken line along the far western horizon. The sounds of passerine birds, meadowlarks, led him on; the swimmer further below captured his attention next.
He walked a few doze

Scott drove over to nearby Masonville that same night to reluctantly do further investigating, and after some tedious searching, came to Wendy Sturmer's rather out-of-the-way address. It was a cozy place in one of four duplexes built in a naturally open part of the landscape and surrounded by tamed wilderness. A large deep pond adequate to do recreational fishing and other activities was nearby too. By now, the sky was overcast and gray, to give the outside environment an ominous spooky appearance, and just as the time of the sunset could not be accurately determined by observation from the curving sidewalk, his exact situation w

"Can you come in here," Wendy called.
"In a bit. What's up?" he replied, and moved slowly from a plexiglass case in a corner that contained porcelain and crystal fantasy figurines toward the slightly ajar door.
"I've got a problem, I think. Please hurry."
Scott did but was surprised upon entering the room. She was sprawled out on the queen-sized canopy bed and wearing red latex undergarments only. A large clear plastic bag was lying over her regular clothes and robe on a nearby cedar chest, and after she pursed her lips at him, he closed the door instinctively, turning his head back and forth in

Wendy yawned and subsequently coughed: initial effects of oxygen deprivation. "I could show you where I found her and more -- tomorrow."
"I'd like that, in the afternoon, but tell me more now."
"Well, there's really not that much. I found her beside an unpaved road like the newspapers said, but it looked enough to me as if she was placed there."
"By what?"
"Your guess is as good as mine. Could have been a river dredging machine or something similar by the way she looked. I couldn't believe the poor girl was still alive," she said. "That was a sight I'll never forget."
"I'll

Wendy stretched and delivered another relentless kiss, to further seduce him. This time, she used her hands and tongue more while squirming erotically on him, to initiate a unique wrestling match that eventually reached a passionate climax on the floor and ended with both of them exhausted and well-satisfied. By then, her strength and oxygen were almost spent, and he had his shirt off and was clammy with perspiration. The arduous exhilarating experience would never be forgotten by both of them.
Scott was the first to get up off the floor to regain his breath, as she continued to smother willfully in the stronger custom

Scott drove home in the dark thinking more of Celeste than Wendy. Her mysteriousness intrigued him still, and he was not sure of how important his intimacy was regarded by the "wild" woman, based on her reputation. He tended to avoid conflicting and confusing things. Wendy was more confusing yet but fortunately open to suggestion; he decided not to fall for her hook, line, and sinker just upon one very close encounter. To express love and show emotion was to make one vulnerable, and he hoped no regrettable mistakes had been made. So, much had to be learned first before any commitments or definite conclusions could be made about

The cloud cover was becoming more broken by the time Scott parked his pickup truck for the night in front of his house on a sloping open street, and he noticed the clear patches better with the low stratus illuminated by the city lights. The brighter stars shined and scintillated in them to various degrees and resembled distant towns set in a flat inverted landscape that changed shape slowly at the whim of nature's dynamic laws. From the edge of the lawn, his keen eyes even caught sight of the bright planet Jupiter blinking in and out of view in the west like a poorly regulated beacon, and he turned toward the old familiar door, w
