Skimmers

Lieutenant Lisa's explorer craft crashes into the warm shallow sea on the third moon of a large Saturn-like planet 178 light years from Earth. In her attempt to reach the surface of the water after successfully escaping the sunken ship, aerial alien "skimmer" creatures are alarmed by her presence and coat it with a strong polymerizing membrane as a defensive act. On this exotic world, the skimmers are more evolved from plant than animal, and lacking significant cephalization, they are more instinctive in their action - perhaps like insects. Also, they lack predatory teeth, and gulp water and filter feed from the vast sea. A very hot blue Vega-type star provides the planet and moons with plenty of adequate warmth, even from just over 1/2 billion miles away. This heat also helps the creature's secretion form a surface membrane upon contact. Do you think Lisa will get through it?
